Memoria, Resistencia y Sobrevivencia: Legados del imaginario Latino Americano.
Una exhibición de zines que explora el continente latino americano, dirigida por estudiantes
Memory, Resitance and Survival: Legacies of the Latin American Imaginary
A student-led showcase of zines exploring the Latin American continent.
This project started during a Year 2 module in POLIS, at the University of Leeds. The module, Latin America in Global Historical Perspective, began by exploring an archive of Latin America; a set of music videos, which together captured a multitude of Latin American pasts, presents and imagined futures by creating a tapestry of ‘artefacts’.
The pieces presented as part of this exhibition were created by students for their assessment pieces. In attempt to rescue these artworks and the messages they carry from the black hole of Turnitin, we bring them together here to share the journey we took together and spread awareness around the global significance of Latin America’s most critical issues today.
If you’re interested in learning more, come to our exhibition launch to meet the artists!

AKNOWLEGMENTS
Anna Grimaldi:
We owe our deepest gratitude to Dr Anna Grimaldi - without her, none of this would have been possible. As the visionary behind the Thinking Inside the Box project and the driving force behind the Level 2 module from which these zines emerged, Anna has been a constant source of inspiration and support. From shaping the curriculum to mentoring students, organising meetings, and fostering a learning environment grounded in creativity, care, and critical engagement, she has guided this project from conception to completion with unwavering dedication.
Her dedication to decolonial and liberationist pedagogies has not only informed the academic framework of the project but has also inspired us all to think beyond the classroom and engage with global justice in meaningful ways. Through her teaching and leadership, Anna has empowered students to take ownership of their work and connect with archival materials in ways that are both intellectually rigorous and personally transformative. Anna brings expertise in human rights, transnational solidarity, and Latin American politics—expertise that shines through in every aspect of this exhibition.
Thank you, Anna, for your vision, your care, and your unwavering belief in what this project could become. This exhibition simply would not exist without you!
Centre for Teaching Innovation and Scholarship (CTIS)
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Centre for Teaching Innovation and Scholarship (CTIS) at the University of Leeds for their generous support in making this exhibition possible. Their funding, along with the provision of exhibition space and refreshments, has been instrumental in bringing our vision to life.
CTIS plays a vital role in fostering pedagogical research and innovation within the School of Politics and International Studies (POLIS), strengthening the link between research, teaching, and the student experience. With a strong commitment to inclusive, decolonial, and research-led education, CTIS provides a collaborative hub for staff and students alike to explore transformative approaches to global challenges. We are especially grateful for their continued dedication to empowering student-led initiatives and for providing a supportive environment where creativity, critical thinking, and educational innovation can thrive!
University of Leeds Latin American Society:
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to LatAmSoc for their support and enthusiasm throughout the planning and promotion of our events. LATAM Soc is more than just a cultural group - it’s a vibrant community that celebrates the richness, diversity, and spirit of Latin America in Leeds. Thank you for helping spread the word!
Pejvak Yarahmady:
Pejvak is a second-year Graphic Design student at the University of Leeds, driven by a passion to create impactful visual work and challenge the norms of contemporary design. We’re incredibly grateful to Pejvak for serving as the Graphic Design Lead for this exhibition. He is the creative mind behind all the posters, leaflets, and social media graphics, and has also provided ongoing guidance on zine design throughout the process.
